At CES 2025, L’Oréal Groupe is set to unveil L’Oréal Cell BioPrint, a new hardware device designed to provide customized skin analysis in just five minutes. This tabletop device leverages advanced proteomics – the study of how proteins in the human body influence biological processes, including skin aging – to offer insights beyond surface-level analysis.
L’Oréal Cell BioPrint aims to enhance skincare personalization by utilizing proteomics science to better understand individual skin biology. Proteomics, which investigates how protein composition varies and impacts overall health, has now been adapted for skin intelligence. Through a collaboration with Korean startup NanoEnTek, L’Oréal has integrated lab technology into a credit card-sized device, enabling the detection of patented biomarkers within the skin. These biomarkers can reveal information about the skin’s condition over time, offering a more comprehensive view of skin health and longevity.
How L’Oréal Cell BioPrint Works
The device conducts a skin assessment within five minutes, analyzing various aspects of skin health, including:
- Biological Age of Skin: Determines the rate of skin aging at a cellular level and provides tailored recommendations to help slow down the process.
- Ingredient Responsiveness: Evaluates how effectively key ingredients, such as retinol, may work for the user, reducing the need for trial and error.
- Proactive Skincare Planning: Predicts potential skin issues, such as dark spots or enlarged pores, before they become visible, allowing users to take preventative measures.
The process involves placing a facial tape strip on the cheek, which is then immersed in a buffer solution. The solution is loaded into a cartridge and inserted into the BioPrint device for analysis. Simultaneously, facial images are captured by the Skin Connect device, and the user completes a brief questionnaire about their skin concerns.
The Value of Biomarker Research in Skincare
L’Oréal’s Advanced Research division has identified unique biomarkers in the skin that correlate with health and longevity. These biomarkers provide insights that were previously only accessible in laboratory settings. By incorporating NanoEnTek’s microfluidic lab-on-a-chip technology, L’Oréal Cell BioPrint can analyze these markers quickly and non-invasively, offering personalized skin assessments at beauty counters.
Barbara Lavernos, Deputy CEO in charge of Research, Innovation, and Technology at L’Oréal Groupe, commented, “With skin being the largest organ and essential to well-being, we are excited to introduce Cell BioPrint. This technology allows people to gain deeper insights into their skin through biomarker analysis and proactively address their skin health.”
Meeting the Demand for Personalized Skincare
The launch of L’Oréal Cell BioPrint aligns with the growing trend of skincare personalization. The global skincare market is projected to reach $125 billion in 2024, driven by consumers seeking more effective and individualized products. A recent survey found that nearly 80% of skincare users rely on trial and error to identify suitable products, often testing multiple options before finding the right fit.
By minimizing guesswork, L’Oréal Cell BioPrint offers a data-driven solution for skincare, enabling users to make informed decisions based on their unique skin biology. This innovation underscores L’Oréal’s ongoing commitment to blending scientific research with beauty expertise.
The device is scheduled to pilot with a L’Oréal brand in Asia later in 2025, with potential for broader adoption in the future.
