A Minecraft Movie has only been out for just over a week, but there’s been a lot of discourse lately. Theatergoers have been acting pretty rowdy, loudly quoting lines, throwing popcorn, and even bringing chickens into the theater. While director Jared Hess is more than okay with this, star Jack Black recently told audiences to chill the hell out and be normal.
“For today’s presentation of A Minecraft Movie, please no throwing popped corn, and also no Lapis Lazuli, and also absolutely no Chicken Jockey,” said the actor during a surprise appearance at a recent showing.
Black entered the theater to applause and excitement from the young crowd, doing the “I… am Steve!” quote and brandishing the pickaxe he has in the film. It goes without saying this stunt went viral, and it’ll probably help the movie rake in even more money. Sure, this was probably a one-time thing, but on the off chance it’s not and you get to see Jack Black before seeing his movie, well….

Whether the crowd heeded his words or not is another matter entirely. There’s been an ongoing problem with theater etiquette for years, exacerbated by the pandemic. People don’t know how to behave anymore, and it’s part of why the film industry is in such a weird state. With Minecraft being the biggest movie in the world right now—as of this weekend, it’s made $550.6 million worldwide, so it’s definitely hitting $1 billion when all’s said and done—it’s good to have Black front and center on telling folks to be mindful while still having fun watching his movie.
